The Fragile Frontier

Breakthroughs feel definitive, but they are anything but. They are the earliest moments of clarity, glimpses of what might be possible if nurtured, repeated, and made robust.
A career leading incredible teams at the frontier of science yields the wonder of new futures, but it also creates a deep restlessness around the unfinished business of discovery: turning rare breakthroughs into scalable, reproducible outcomes that benefit all of us.
Vannevar Bush famously called science The Endless Frontier, noting both that research is the engine of progress and that "new products and processes are not born full-grown." Bush’s vision laid the groundwork for institutions like DARPA, born out of the shock of Sputnik to ensure the United States would drive technological surprise, not just react to it, for national security.
When I stepped up to build ARPA-H as its inaugural Director, I often pondered what our "Sputnik moment" was. Over time, I realized it wasn't a single event, but rather something much more personal. For me, it was my mother’s cancer diagnosis. For one of our first Program Managers, it was her family's journey to treat her son’s rare disease. ARPA-H was created with clear urgency to deliver transformative health breakthroughs, and I am profoundly proud of how our team built that agency from a concept on paper into an agent of change, bridging critical gaps in the research and investment ecosystem.
At ARPA-H, you learn to spot giant gaps in healthcare and throw serious resources at solving them. But you also realize that closing those gaps permanently cannot be done by a single agency, a single Program Manager, or a single patient alone. You also realize something is missing.
The next era of global science won't be won by relying on legacy playbooks. The United States has always been the global leader in innovation, so much so that we don't even know what it feels like not to be in first place. But incumbency is a trap. We cannot rest; we have to work for it, and we need a new mold.
If DARPA was built to transform a nation’s defense, and ARPA-H was built to address personal Sputniks in human health, the next era of science belongs to physical AI: extending the human scientist, augmenting our workforce, and allowing American ingenuity to operate at the top of its license.
Transfyr is built to be the physical AI translation infrastructure for science. My co-founder Anna Marie and I set out to create the conditions where breakthroughs are no longer fragile anomalies, but reproducible, transferable, and scalable engines.
The work of discovery is hard. The work of translation is harder. Transfyr will build the infrastructure that powers both.
